There is much talk in the spiritual community these days about the Divine Feminine, but what exactly is it? What does the manifestation of Divine Feminine energy look like, why do we need it, and how can we connect to our Divine Feminine, regardless of our gender expression?
Here we’ll take a look at all it means to be in your Divine Feminine and what that energy entails, so that you can begin your journey to connecting to your Divine Feminine and bringing your Divine Self, and the world around you, into balance!
What is the Divine Feminine?
The Divine Feminine is the counterpart and balance to the Divine Masculine. It is the yin to Divine Masculine’s yang. When these two qualities are embraced in a person, it can result in an overall balance and groundedness to the earth and one’s Self.
The Divine Feminine is a grounded, intuitive energy that is deeply connected to Earth and nature. While the Divine Feminine is a receptive energy, it is also fierce, protecting and nurturing those it cares about, including itself. It is anything but passive, yet it also has the capacity to allow – allow rest, allow space, allow time.
The Divine Feminine embraces the cycles of life and the ebb and flow of nature, rather than enforcing a constant stream of productivity and labor in order to have value. It is sensual, taking its time to notice feelings in the body, and the beauty of life all around it.
The moon and the ocean carry Divine Feminine energy, as well as trees in their cycle of death and rebirth. Divine Feminine is wild and untamed, and yet soft, quiet, and still.
What Does it Mean to Have Divine Feminine Energy?
You do not have to have been born with female-associated reproductive parts or identify as female in order to embrace your Divine Feminine.
In fact, our patriarchal society has become heavily unbalanced due to the erasure of the Divine Feminine energy, especially within those who have identified as male from birth.
As a result, this has created wounded feminine and masculine energy to run rampant, bringing with it systemic inequality, among those of differing gender, race, and class than that of the prominent rich, white, male identity.
Embracing the Divine Feminine along with the Divine Masculine, and tending to the wounded parts of ourselves that have repressed these qualities, is essential in bringing balance to the body, the mind, and all of nature itself.
One cannot exist without the other, but they can be imbalanced, creating wounds that manifest as unsavory traits, keeping us from connecting to the Divine Whole within.
What Are Divine Feminine Qualities?
There are many qualities that define and illustrate the Divine Feminine energy. Let’s take a look at a few of them!
As the Divine Masculine is assertive, the Divine Feminine is receptive. Think of the Suit of Cups in the Tarot – ready to receive and hold what is poured into it. This doesn’t mean negative projections by others must be held onto, but the Divine Feminine is open to receiving love, care, sensuality, etc. without reticence, knowing that it deserves all the good things coming to it.
The Divine Feminine is strongly associated with intuition – although it is reductive, think of the phrase “Women’s intuition”, and this should give you an idea of the Divine Feminine. Because it is so open and receptive, the Divine Feminine is able to tune in to subtle changes in energy, using observation, experience, and the inner voice.
The Divine Feminine is a supportive energy, holding space to nurture what needs to grow, within itself and others. Rather than giving up its own agency to tend to other’s needs, the Divine Feminine takes care of and supports itself first, in order to be a better nurturer to others.
The Divine Feminine is very connected to Earth, nature, and all its cycles. It understands it is rooted to the earth, and a part of these cycles of nature, not separate at all. Being grounded allows the Divine Feminine to exhibit all of its other qualities from a firm foundation.
Rather than constantly charging ahead, the Divine Feminine takes its time to reflect before taking action, as well as reflect on actions taken.
Taking time to breathe into its consciousness allows the Divine Feminine to take time before making decisions and connect to its own inner voice, so that it can make the best decisions for itself at the time.
Empathetic and Compassionate
The Divine Feminine understands and has empathy and compassion for what others are going through, leading with love, not judgement. Rather than projecting its own emotions onto others in the name of ‘empathizing’, it holds space for the unique experience of others while upholding its own emotional boundaries.
The Divine Feminine understands the importance of boundaries, but also shows faith in others by trusting their intentions and motivations as coming from a place of good intent. In this way, it is able to be trusted more completely by others, as well.
The Divine Feminine understands the need for creativity – after all, it is the representative of the creation of all life.
Whether it be an art project, creating safe community and relationships, or the creation of life, the Divine Feminine makes time and space to keep the creative juices flowing.
When the Divine Feminine is out of balance, it can create the conditions for Wounded Feminine traits to appear. These include being insecure, manipulative, needy, codependent, and inauthentic. If these traits are taking over, it is a sign that it is time to connect to your Divine Feminine energy.
How Can You Connect to Your Divine Feminine Energy?
Let’s look at ways you can connect to your divine feminine energy.
Getting your thoughts out on paper is a great way to connect with your Divine Feminine energy. There are many ways to create a journaling practice, and no one way is better than the others; it all depends on what works for you.
You may choose to follow Julia Cameron’s framework of Morning Pages – 3 pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing at the beginning of every day upon waking, to reawaken your creativity.
You can also work with pre-written prompts if you are unsure of what to write about. Shadow Work can be done effectively using journaling prompts. You might also choose to create a scrapbook journal using ephemera, with only a little bit of writing. The choice is yours!
Being in your Divine Feminine includes the nurturing of others, but that can’t be done effectively until you have committed to nurturing yourself, first. Setting aside time during your day to pamper yourself, in whatever way you choose, is an important step to connect to your Divine Feminine energy.
Whether it be a daily skincare routine, ritual baths, making yourself a delicious snack while watching your favorite show, or even something as small as bringing a treat to work, self-care is an amazing way to show appreciation for yourself, and allow yourself to show up for yourself and others in your life more completely.
The Divine Feminine understands the important of rest. If you’re struggling with burnout, you will not have the resources to help yourself or anybody else. Allowing yourself time to rest, relax, and recharge allows you to approach your life more fully present.
Once you allow yourself time to rest and take care of yourself, you will find that the things you may have stressed about missing while resting can take care of themselves. Even the most important work suffers when there is no time taken out to rest – so no excuses!
Embrace Your Sensuality
The Divine Feminine delights in all of the senses of the body and takes time to appreciate the body as well. There’s a reason that Aphrodite, or Venus are seen as goddesses of the Divine Feminine – they embrace everything to do with sensuality and delighting in living inside the body.
Sensuality can, of course, be seen in a sexual way, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. It is merely the awakening and appreciation of the senses. T
ry anointing yourself in your favorite scent before tucking yourself into your freshly washed linens for a deep, restful sleep. Buy yourself the expensive chocolate, just this once, and delight in its flavor while letting it slowly melt in your mouth.
If you have a partner, take time together to massage and appreciate each other’s bodies and presence. Go out into the world and see art, or take a hike in nature, and listen to your favorite music while you do your chores around the house.
These simple ways of embracing sensuality can help bring your Divine Feminine forth while also creating a wonderful space for yourself to experience and ground into your body.
Tap Into Your Intuition
Tapping into your intuition is an important step in connecting to your Divine Feminine. By simply allowing yourself to sit with yourself in meditation, and allowing whatever thoughts come into your head to surface, without judgement, you can learn to listen to your own intuition.
Instead of charging ahead through life mindlessly on autopilot, take the time to notice thoughts and feelings as they come up, and then observe what happens afterward.
This practice will allow you to discern between your intuition and gut feeling, and what your thinking mind – the ego – is telling you. Thoughts coming from ego are wholly tied up in coping mechanisms and strategies to keep you safe as a result of earlier experience, and are not reliable facts about your environment.
Your subconscious, more than your conscious mind, is from where intuition is born, and it is more often right than not.
Another way to tap into your subconscious mind is through dreamwork. This is easily tied into a dream journaling practice. When you wake from a dream and still hold details of it in your mind, immediately write down everything you can remember.
The more you write about dreams and the symbolism you find and how they might manifest in your waking life, the more you develop a lexicon to understanding your subconscious and intuition, thus connecting you even deeper to your Divine Feminine energy.
Honor Your Body, Feel Your Feelings
Bringing your body and mind together is an important part of tapping into your Divine Feminine.
Often, we are driven purely by our thoughts and taught to ignore our body’s signs that it needs rest, or care, which leads to burnout, and mental stress manifesting in the body as chronic pain or illness.
When we take the time to listen to and honor our body’s needs, we are connecting to our Divine Feminine.
It is also common to ignore feelings as they come up, or explain them away, or try to out think them.
Pushing these feelings down only results in them coming up heavier and harder to ignore later, or as physical pain or illness in the body.
Instead of pushing inconvenient feelings down, allow them to surface fully, and notice where you feel them in your body. You don’t have to identify with them or attach a story to them – just let them exist.
You will find that they pass much quicker this way, with no lasting effects. In many cultures, it is thought that when a feeling rises to the surface, it is coming up to go – so let your feelings surface, and then let them go, with gratitude.
Finally, taking the time for a creative practice is a beautiful way to connect to your Divine Feminine energy. It doesn’t matter what you are creating, as long as you are creating something.
It doesn’t have to be good, and you don’t have to show anyone – in fact, some of the best creative practices for Divine Feminine energy are kept purely for yourself.
Doing something simply for the pleasure of doing it, without any expectations of quality, helps you live in your Divine Feminine and honor your creative side.
So, if you’ve never thought of yourself as a creative person, try something that you always thought you would enjoy but hesitated because you felt you didn’t have any skill – skill doesn’t matter here, only play and nurturing creativity.
