If you’ve ever been through a difficult time or season in your life, you’ve probably relied heavily on a personal support system. But did you know that you have a heavily support system as well?
In a realm outside of what we can physically see, Archangels, and other spirits dedicated to doing the highest good, serve as intermediaries. Going between us and God, assisting us with our burdens and providing protection–even when we are painfully unaware.
As a spiritual person, I usually have a story that I tell that is related to whatever I’m writing about. Usually, they are my own. After all, our own stories are the ones we tell the best.
However, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that the concept of Archangels is one that I didn’t fully understand until I was way into my adulthood. But, the amount of help I’ve received since becoming aware of their presence has been mind-blowing.
In this article, I will explain who and what Archangels are, how they can help you, and how you can invoke the Archangels.
What are Archangels?
Unlike mankind, all angels aren’t created equally. You see, there is an order of angels. A hierarchy, if you will–and the Archangels, they sit on the top tier. The term “Archangel” comes from a Greek word that translates to ‘chief angel’ and signifies their importance and power.
Although each Archangel has a specific purpose, some of their duties are shared. For example, Archangels are responsible for soul contracts. They are managers and overseers of guardian angels, each assigned to help us with a different aspect of humanity.
From wisdom to peace, empowerment to forgiveness, Archangels are well equipped when it comes to handling life’s big challenges. But like us humans, they have their own missions to fulfill. Thankfully, they’re willing to assist us as they complete their own assignments.
Who are the Archangels?
Because they’re so unique, it’s much easier to talk about Archangels individually than it is to describe them as a whole group.
Just like siblings in a family, they all have their own strengths and areas of skill. Each one, complimenting the perfection of the other.
Although there’s no way to be sure exactly how many Archangels exist, traditionally, there are believed to be 15. Let’s look at each one in detail.
Known as the ‘Lion of God,’ Ariel is an Archangel mentioned in several religious texts and myths. No doubt, the meaning of her name sounds very fierce. As it should since Ariel serves as the Archangel of the natural world.
The overseer of plants and animals, Archangel Ariel is a healer who provides comfort to those who are hurting and punishes those who inflict pain on others.
Archangel Ariel represents all four elements: earth, wind, water, and fire. The embodiment of magic and manifestation, she can help you bring all of your desires to fruition.
One way to connect with Ariel is to use natural essential oils. Palo Santo, Sage, and Lavender are three of the most powerful oils to use for healing in connection with Archangels.
One of the bravest Archangels, legend says that Archangel Azrael was the only angel brave enough to face Satan on earth and provide God with all he needed to make man.
The ‘Death Angel,’ Azrael has a unique purpose–he supports humans who have passed on and are transitioning to the other side (AKA the spirit realm).
Although this might seem of little use to the living, Archangel Azrael can be helpful when it comes to grief and serves as a comforter to those of us who have lost loved ones or friends. There are prayers that can be recited to Archangel Azrael as a way to request peace. Here’s an example:
“Archangel Azrael, oh wonderful comforter, I ask that you stand beside me now as I grieve what I have lost. I ask for emotional healing and solace as I let go of what has been lost and start anew. Bless those that have left us or will leave us soon. Alleviate all pain and fear as you guide them to a better place. Amen.“
It is important to remember that Azrael doesn’t bring death. He only helps those who have met such a fate transition on.
Also, known as Kamae, the ‘One Who Seeks God’ is also one of many aliases. Samuel and Camiel are also names for the Archangel of peaceful relationships.
It is he, Archangel Chamuel, that I pray to the most. I’ve found that Archangel Chamuel can help with so many different issues–one of the most important being relationship with oneself. If you’re struggling to find peace internally or in your relationships with others, try this ritual:
- Gather a candle, lighter, and a small blanket (if you wish.)
- Go somewhere private and quiet.
- Get yourself into a relaxed position, making sure your spine is straight, and set your intent to seek help from the Archangels.
- Light the candle and then close your eyes, breathing deeply, in and out.
- Ask Archangel Chamuel to help you let go of any resentments you hold against yourself or others. Imagine these resentments as bags of heavy sand, strung together with a long cord.
- See yourself cutting the cord as you call on Chamuel to assist you in forgiving, letting go, and accepting peace. As you breathe, picture your burdens becoming less heavy as these weights are lifted, one by one.
- Rest in this position as long as needed.
The most well-known of all, Archangel Gabriel made his Biblical cameo when he reached out to Mary, the mother of Jesus, to let her know that she would be expecting.
2000 years later, he is still assisting us, humans, serving as a messenger from God to certain people. The Archangel of revelation, it is Gabriel who brings clarity and understanding to those who are confused and don’t know which way to turn.
I always connect him with new beginnings, especially with communication, so if you are in need of a ‘fresh start,’ offering up a prayer to Gabriel could help you greatly.
You can also ask Gabriel to purify your heart and soul. But keep in mind, it’s not what you say that matters as much as the intention behind it.
A unique attraction to the moon is something I’ve had since I was a little girl. The same is true for the planet Venus. Maybe it’s because I’m emotional and intuitive.
If you feel the same, Archangel Haniel is probably serving as one of your guides. Feminine and full of joy, Haniel is the Archangel of both Venus and the moon. Like Archangel Muriel, she helps us strengthen our intuition and connection with self and source.
This makes sense being the lunar cycle is responsible for two R’s–release and realignment. So, if you find yourself in a place where you need to ‘find yourself’ again, Archangel Haniel is definitely the one to call on.
This can be done through prayer or even a moon ritual. Here’s my favorite full moon ritual:
- Fill up a mason jar with tap water.
- As you set an intention for what you would like to see manifested (more money, stronger relationships, etc.) place it outside under the full moon.
- Pick it up the next morning and use it however you’d like. Some people drink it, others use it to wash their face.
- I like to add it to my perfume or bathe with it (don’t drink it if you do this). I’ve even poured the whole jar into the tub with me!
Letting go of past hurt and resentment can be a tall order. Miranda Lambert’s song ‘Bluebird’ has a line that says, “Forgiving is pretty hard, so I’ve made an art out of forgetting them well.” It’s something that I can relate to since I used to have a bad habit of trying to ‘forgive and forget’ without actually forgiving.
As the Archangel of forgiveness and mercy, Jeremiel can assist with this task while helping you gain a positive perspective as you shed hurt that is holding you back. This is true for even the most painful situations.
For most of us, this is part of the self-actualization process and is super personal. So, how you go about it is up to you.
One great option is to use a journal. You can split the page in half. On one side, list the resentment and hurt. Below it, write any negative feelings that come up.
Sit with these feelings for a moment and ask Archangel Jeremiel to help you forgive. Then, on the right side, list any positive takeaways from the experience.
This can be difficult for tough situations like death or divorce. But I have found that even the most traumatic times contain a small sliver of silver lining.
The epitome of beauty, Archangel Jophiel is powerful in many ways. Her ability to heal painful memories and help get rid of painful emotions makes her an asset to all who walk the earth.
This might seem similar to what Jeremiel does, but Archangel Jophiel has gifts that other Archangels do not. She can calm chaotic situations and bring peace to your home as well.
When I’m feeling overwhelmed with my house or having trouble organizing my things, Jophiel assists me. I wear yellow to connect with her and light yellow candles as well.
This might seem simple, but it makes a world of difference energetically! When I’m mentally clear, I’m able to focus on the things that I love and much more successful in every area.
If you’ve read any of my other articles, you know that I’m huge on releasing limiting beliefs and self-doubt. It’s something I work on daily and thank goodness, we have a powerful Archangel who can help with this task.
Archangel Metatron is often depicted as a transformer. This might seem a bit strange, but not really when you think about what he can help us do. By transforming our mindset, we can transform our lives.
Archangel Metatron is the master of numerology and geometry, so he often communicates through angel numbers. If you see a number coming up over and over again, check out my angel number article so you can see what kind of message Archangel Metatron might be wanting to share with you.
One of the seven major Archangels, Michael is known as the great protector and lightworker. He is the only angel actually named such in the Bible. Dripping in gold and with his sword in hand, Archangel Michael is the one to respond when someone needs strength and courage.
He is also a great healer and can make all things right with the body, mind, and soul. He has helped people overcome physical ailments as well as depression and heartbreak.
If you’re going through tough times and need Archangel Michael’s help, there is a quick way to get it. Simply close your eyes and imagine his golden light circling all around you.
Ask Archangel Michael to provide you with both healing and protection as you move throughout your day. Embrace this gift wholeheartedly. You could also go on a spiritual cleanse.
My friend Maggie once told me a great story of Archangel Micheal and his protective powers. When Maggie was expecting her first child, she rode with a friend and her brother to drop the brother’s girlfriend off at her home.
After kissing her beau goodbye, the girlfriend got out of the front passenger’s seat and waltzed up to her apartment door. Watching from the back seat, Maggie and her friend were shocked at what they saw next–a man with a gun coming out of the apartment.
As it turns out, the young lady was dating more than one guy and one with a violent streak, at that. As the bullets rained down on the vehicle, Maggie ducked and prayed to Archangel Michael for protection.
The driver sped away, getting them to safety. After examining the car, the police discovered that several bullets had entered the door right where Maggie’s head and belly were positioned. In awe that she wasn’t killed, the investigators looked closely to figure out how she had got so lucky.
This is when they found that the bullets had stopped just shy of piercing the inner door paneling. Although outsiders called it luck, Maggie knew that an angelic force was responsible for saving the day.
Do you have a really strong intuition? Or seem to just ‘know’ things? If so, your connection to Archangel Muriel is a strong one.
Although her name translates to the ‘Perfume of God,’ Archangel Muriel is best linked to psychic abilities and emotions. She promotes using one’s own intuition to usher in peach and create a harmonious life.
Here are a few things I’ve found that Muriel can help with:
- Developing psychic abilities
- Calming anxiety and negative emotions
- Protecting one from negative energy
Because she is the patron of empaths (I am one myself) I try to stay connected to Archangel Muriel. I do this in a number of ways. One is through the use of crystals. My favorites: Obsidian, smokey quartz, and hematite. Amethyst is also an option.
I love a good mystery! So it’s no surprise that Archangel Raziel is one of the most intriguing Archangels to me. Known as the ‘Keeper of the Secrets of the Universe,’ Archangel Raziel helps us by revealing holy secrets when most needed.
Ancient texts consider him an angel of divine wisdom since he is said to hear all that God says. If you need help remembering something or making an important decision, Raziel is the Archangel to call upon.
The same is true for people trying to get over painful memories and past traumas. This is true for both current and past lives. Not sure where to start? A past-life meditation or Tarot reading might be helpful.
Thousands of stories around the globe tell tales of healing at the hands of Archangel Raphael. He is the angel to call on for all things ‘health’ and the center of much folklore including a Biblical account in which he was sent by God to heal a man of blindness.
Because he has been blessed by God with the ability to heal directly, many people pray to Archangel Raphael to touch the areas that they need healed. Not sure if your prayers to Archangel Raphael are working? Look for these signs:
- Seeing sparkles of green light
- Feeling tingling vibrations
- Seeing angel numbers
- Hearing whispers
Unlike most of the other Archangels, many believe this guide was once a human. He is known as the ‘tall one’ because of stature but is even more famous for his ability to bring emotional healing through music.
Archangel Sandalphon has two other equally important roles–he carries messages to God and he also protects unborn children.
According to Jewish scriptures, it is he who decides whether or not a child will be a boy or girl at the time of conception. He also has the duty of returning to heaven the souls of any children who cannot be born.
Women who are pregnant often pray to Archangel Sandalphon for protection for themselves and their unborn babies. Adding music to the prayer or singing songs is another way to connect with Archangel Sandalphon.
Both feminine and masculine, Uriel, like all other Archangels, can take on the form you most need at the present time. Stepping forward with white and gold energy, this guide of wisdom helps one receive spiritual information and make smart decisions.
I love to ask Archangel Uriel for help during meditation because I’ve found that it helps me get to know thought and increase mindfulness.
Creative inspiration can come from Archangel Uriel, as well. So, if you’re feeling unmotivated or uninspired, Uriel can help you get out of a funk. Putting fear aside and being spontaneous is a good first step.
Surrender has always been the hardest for me. I’m always up for a challenge and in the past, I wore a “refuse to fold” attitude like a badge of honor.
But as I’ve grown spiritually, I have come to learn that Kenny Rogers was right–you have to know when to hold’em and also when to fold’em. That’s not to say letting go is easy for me now. But I can say that it is much easier with the help of Archangel Zadkiel, the angel of surrender.
He is also the angel of mercy, so even when we struggle and make mistakes, Archangel Zadkiel is always there for support. Some of the things that I do when connecting to him/embracing surrender is:
- Repeating a positive mantra that reminds me that control is not the end goal (“I let go of what I can’t influence and focus on what I can.”
- Practice mindfulness and meditate daily
- Let negative emotions appear and disappear without forcing them out
- Practice being gentle with myself and others

Invoke the Archangels
Invoking the Archangels is a lot simpler than it sounds. You simply ask them for help. I tried to weave some unique ideas into each section.
Oils, prayers, rituals, and the like all work wonders, but the truth is, closing your eyes and calling on the angels for assistance works just as well. Here are a few other things you can do to ensure that you get the assistance you seek:
- Let go of any clouds of darkness and envision yourself full of and surrounded by light.
- Direct your prayer or plea for assistance to both God and the Archangel you’re requesting help from.
- Say it out loud, say it in your mind, or write it down–whatever you feel most comfortable with is fine.
- Affirm that you will receive help by ending the request by saying something like “I thank you for your guidance and assistance.”
But above all else, the key to invoking help from Archangels is to believe. Without faith and belief, our prayers are dead in the water. You have to know that Archangels exist to provide unconditional love and support–and you, yes, YOU, are deserving of that.
